Our Des Moines design team spent volunteer time at our local Meals for the Heartland organization.

Hunger is unforgiving.

Every 10 seconds a child dies of hunger-related issues. And it’s not only a problem halfway around the world in developing countries. It’s right here in Iowa and across our nation too. Did you know 1 in 8 Iowa children do not have enough to eat? Meals from the Heartland has been actively and successfully battling hunger for over 14 years, delivering nourished food and hope. Currently, thousands of volunteers come together to package millions of meals each year.

Meals for the Heartland

A group of Des Moines designers wanted to join in to help. After a brief introduction of what the organization does and getting our sanitary gear on, we were able to go into the packing area. We split into two groups, and each person was assigned a station. We filled bags, weighed them, sealed them & stacked the final meal in boxes. We made their meal called the ‘Hearty Pack’ which is distributed globally. In our 2-hour shift (along with other volunteers) we packaged 31,320 meals! Thank you to the following team members who volunteered their time to help those in need : Katie Leyendecker, Mallory Carter, Julie Kraus, Jess Brakke, Jami Christophersen, Becky Maak, Hannah Hemesath, Emily Appelgate, Paige Mongar.
