University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is Iowa’s singular comprehensive children’s hospital dedicated to providing exceptional care for children from birth to young adulthood while training the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Since 1919, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital has been dedicated to meeting the health care needs of children and families. As part of an academic medical center, UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital also performs groundbreaking research. In 2012 construction began on a new state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the holistic needs of the patients, families, and caregivers.
The 14-story, 507,000-square-foot hospital opened in February 2017 and provides healing environments that minimize stress, encourage hope, and provide maximum comfort. Pigott, Herman Miller, and Nemschoff leveraged years of R&D knowledge to better equip the facility with furnishings that fully accommodate the needs of everyone interacting with the space.
From spacious rooms to family-friendly amenities and settings, every detail was considered. The facility offers private rooms for patients, eight pediatric operating rooms, and an outpatient retail pharmacy. The facility also features many child-centered areas, including a playground, gardens, library, interactive theatre, and – of course- an unbeatable view of the University of Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium. Pigott provided the headwalls and footwalls in the patient rooms, furnishings for the administrative suites, custom patient recliners and sofas for patient rooms, as well as numerous ancillary furnishings in the public spaces throughout the facility.
The new hospital consolidates inpatient pediatric care, procedures, imaging, and surgery that had been previously located throughout University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, which allows those spaces to be converted to private rooms for adult patients. UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is all part of a major shift in the existing culture of the hospitals and clinics to develop a cohesive, best-in-class solution for every space on the campus.
